TamekaThe Arc Participants had a magnificent beginning to the month of May.

To celebrate National Nurses’ Day on Sunday, May 6th and International Nurses’ Day on Saturday, May 12th, we made giant greeting cards and signed them for the Arc’s two nurses, Ms. Gloria C. (RN) and Ms. Reyvel A. (LVN ) They take turns working at the Arc of San Antonio on West Avenue and the Arc of San Antonio / Pam Stephens’ Center on Wurzbach Road. All of the Arc Participants and the staff members are truly thankful that we have these wonderful women to care of us. Read More →

It’s the Little Things That Make a Difference

Hi, everyone! I hope that everyone that reads my blog had an extraordinary Easter holiday. I had a great pre-birthday celebration at the America’s Incredible Pizza restaurant on West Avenue. This is my favorite place to go to when my classmates and I go on outings. While playing all of my favorite arcade games, such as, “The Cyclone” (the object of the game is to stop a whirling light on certain number to win tickets) I really like this game because even with my disability, I can play it by myself. I won 1,218 tickets (plus 250 birthday tickets) with the help of my mom, auntie, and cousin. I used my tickets to get a giant rainbow-colored flexible daisy which is embroidered with the words, “You are my sunshine!”

On Friday, March 30th, the Arc Participants and staff members had a “Wacky Tacky Day” and dressed in crazy and silly outfits to celebrate April Fools’ Day. I wore my uncle’s old Hawaiian shirt (which I believe that my uncle bought in the 1980′s) and green pants with purple and light blue polka-dots and a purple and silver tiara. My classmate and I went around to the other classes and took photographs of everyone’s outfits that I will use in the April 2012 edition of the Arc’s newsletter.

Later on, I passed out “The Little Mermaid” and “The Princess and the Frog” cupcakes to my classmates and the staff members. (which are my two favorite Disney Princesses: Princess Ariel and Princess Tiana) that my mom and I brought from Wal-Mart.

On my birthday, I went to my first live San Antonio Spurs game and it was amazingly awesome! I went to the game with my uncle, which is another huge Spurs fan, like I am. A special person got me the tickets as a birthday gift and I got to see my favorite basketball player, Tony Parker, in person! The Spurs beat the Indiana Pacers 112 to 103 points. It was officially the greatest birthday that I ever had!

A Wee Bit o’Irish!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, everyone! I hope that everybody had a safe and happy holiday.

For National Irish American Heritage month, my fellow Participants and I had a Saint Patrick’s Day celebration where some of the Participants and staff members wore green clothing; made arts and crafts projects, such as “Paper Plate Leprechauns;” and read stories about the country of Ireland and leprechauns about their pots of gold. Jomel keeps moving!

Running a half-marathon is a major goal in anyone’s life. For Jomel C., he made it his goal not once, but three times!

“The trick is to just keep moving,” said Jomel. He is always moving! In fact, he is hard at work training for his third Rock and Roll Half Marathon coming up this November. Read More →

January Happenings

by betharc | No Comments

TamekaA lot of things happened at the Arc during the last part of January.

On Monday, January 9th, Ms. Shawntye P.,(a Life Enrichment Instructor) received the Staff Member of the Quarter award for the 4th Quarter.  My classmates and I are very proud that Shawntye is the staff member in our class. On Friday, January 13th, the Arc Participants remembered the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Participants read a short biography that told of Dr. King’s teachings about equality and his “I Have a Dream” speech. I truly believe that Dr. King would be so proud to know that his dream is slowly becoming a reality. Monday, January 23rd was the start of the Chinese New Year; the year of the dragon. We learned which zodiac sign that we were born under. Some of the other Participants also made Chinese lanterns. We celebrated the Chinese New Year by eating egg rolls and watching an educational video about the Chinese people and their culture. So that was how we finished the month of January at the Arc.

I hope that everyone has a fabulous February
